Frequently Asked Questions
How does the SolarSack work?
The SolarSack works by harnessing UVA and UVB rays and heat from the sun. These three processes combined kill more than 99,99 % of the dangerous pathogens found in water. SolarSack’s purification technique is based on the 25 year old solar water disinfection technology (SODIS). This method has been endorsed by the WHO as a safe way to purify water. SolarSack improves upon this method with the design of the product and by utilizing a plastic formulation that allows for the optimum spectrum of UV light to penetrate the water, where it effectively deactivates the dangerous pathogens.
Is the water filtered?
No, the water is not filtered. It is purified using the solar water disinfection technology.
When is the water safe to drink?
The water is safe to drink when it has been exposed to direct sunlight for 4 hours.
How many times can it be used?
Tests show that the SolarSack can be refilled approximately 500 times. As the SolarSack cleans 4 liters of water per cycle, this equals to the total provision of 2000 liters of clean and safe water.
Which pathogens can get removed?
The SODIS method has proven to inactivate bacteria, viruses and protozoa.
Does SolarSack remove chemicals?
No. Water that has been polluted with chemicals can not be cleaned by SolarSack.
What makes SolarSack a better solution to alternative water purification devices?
There are many advantages the SolarSack has over other alternatives. SolarSack delivers clean water at an incredibly low price point compared to similar products, and thus makes clean water available for end users at the base of the wealth pyramid. Replacing wood fuel for boiling and purifying water with a SolarSack decreases deforestation and CO2 emissions. The SolarSack is furthermore developed based on thoroughly analysed user applicability and works as a household’s private water tap avoiding recontamination from unsafe storage.
Does the SolarSack stop working after 500 cycles?
The SolarSack can be used approximately 500 times when applied correctly but might work for a bit more or a bit less times.
How do you know when the SolarSack does not work anymore?
The SolarSack stops working when the plastic simply breaks. Do not try to patch it together.
Does the SolarSack emit plastic into the water and give you cancer?
No! All plastic SolarSack uses is tested for migration and lives up to local and EU standards for food contact material.
Does the SolarSack work in any type of water?
It is not recommended to clean water with more than 30 NTU of turbidity with the SolarSack. For higher turbidites, the water must be filtered before being cleaned with the SolarSack. Do not use SolarSack if the logo at the bottom of the bag is not clearly visible through the water seen from the top spout.
Does it work in cloudy weather?
No, the SolarSack only works in sunny weather.
Does the water treatment process affect taste?
No. The taste is not affected by the treatment process.
Can the SolarSack be recycled?
Yes! We aim to recycle all SolarSacks at end use by setting up collection and recycling systems.
What is the shelf life of the SolarSack?
